Historical Background
In 1952 a concession covering the entire offshore continental shelf was granted to Shell Company of Netherlands, transferred to the Shell Company of Qatar Limited (SCQ), which ran offshore operations until 1977.
The first offshore oil well, Idd El Sharqi, was discovered in 1960.
The first shipment of Qatar marine/offshore crude oil was exported on 1 February 1964.
Main Activities of Offshore Fields
QP has two offshore production stations located in the north-east quadrant of Qatar territorial waters, PS-2 and PS-3.
Both PS-2 and PS-3 platforms produce crude oil, associated gas and condensate. They are located in the Maydan Mahzam (MM) and Bul Hanine (BH) fields. Oil and condensate are piped to Halul Island for storage and export. Gas is primarily used to assist in lifting the oil from the reservoir. Some gas is taken to Halul for fuel. Oil production in 2003 for PS-2 and PS-3 was 38,898,780 BPD.
Major Customers
Major customers to QP for the purchase of crude oil, gas and condensate include Mitsubishi Corporation, ExxonMobil, Total, Marubeni and Itochu.
Major Achievements
Production rates for QP facilities in 2003 were slightly below target but export rates achieved target set by OPEC.
All offshore operating departments were proud of achieving accreditation to ISO 9001: 2000 compliance.
Production
Pipeline emergency procedure reviewed and upgraded.
New control system upgrade completed on both production stations. System is presently being enhanced.
Future Expansion Plans
Expansion plans on the production stations will include completion of new accommodation units, fire and gas systems and power systems upgrade on PS-2/PS-3. Multiphase flow meters are also being added to all wellhead platforms.
Halul Island expansion plans include the Phase II upgrade of the harbor, to accommodate larger vessels, a new water treatment plant, a marine building and the upgrade of power and water utilities.
