Qatar Fertiliser Company (QAFCO) was established in 1969. It is now jointly owned by Industries Qatar IQ (75%) and Norsk Hydro, Norway (25%).
QAFCO complex in Mesaieed Industrial City comprises three completely integrated trains. Each train is made up of two units, one for production of ammonia and the other for urea, besides a urea formaldehyde unit, which makes QAFCO self-sufficient in urea formaldehyde.
QAFCO total annual production capacity now is 1.35 million tons (MT) of ammonia and 1.6 million tons of urea, and it will jump to 2 million tons of ammonia and 2.8 million tons of urea, after the completion of QAFCO-4 plant in mid 2004, making QAFCO the world’s largest single site producer of urea and ammonia.

Marketing
In 2003 QAFCO’s main markets for ammonia were India (69%), USA (14%), South Korea (7%), South Africa (5%), Jordan (1%), Brazil (1%) Taiwan (1%), Morocco (1%), France (1%). While the main markets for urea were USA (24%), Thailand (16%), South Africa (12%), Vietnam (10%), Philippines (9%), Australia (7%), Sri Lanka (4%), Japan (3%), India (2%), New Zealand (2%), South Korea (2%), others (9%).
Giving high priority to achieve high standards of quality in all fronts, QAFCO has now become one of a few companies in the world and the first company in the Middle East to obtain three highly acclaimed quality certifications, namely ISO 900:2000 (since May 1996), ISO 14001 (since December 1997) and OHSAS 18001 (since December 1999).
