Qatar Chemical Company (Q-Chem)

Q-Chem was established on 16 November 1997 and is a joint venture between Qatar Petroleum who have a majority share of 51% and Chevron Phillips Chemical Company International Qatar Holdings LLC, 49%.

The plant facility is a world-class petrochemical plant producing high density polyethylene (HDPE) and 1-Hexene (alpha olefin) and other associated by-products using Chevron Phillips proprietary loop slurry technology.

Q-Chem enjoys a strategic location with easy access to the export markets of Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

On 9 June 2003, Q-Chem celebrated the occasion of its first shipment of polyethylene by containership. To date, the company has shipped products to more than 40 countries in film and blow molding application.

Q-Chem will continue its efforts to have its products qualified by users, focus on strategic markets and promote awareness of Q-Chem and product lines in tradeshows, seminars and advertisements.

Q-Chem goal is to be viewed as a regular and consistent supplier.

Future Plans

RC2 Project (Also known as the Ras Laffan Cracker Co.)

In June of 2002 two major petrochemical companies joined forces to develop a world class ethylene production facility in Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City. The RC2 Project owned by Q-Chem II (Chevron Phillips & Qatar Petroleum 54%) and Qatofin (Atofina & QAPCO 46%) will produce 1.3 MMTPA.

Ethylene produced will be transported from Ras Laffan to derivatives units in the Mesaieed Industrial City via a 120 km 16 inch pipeline. In Mesaieed 700,000 MTPA will be allocated to Q-Chem II and 600,000 MTPA will be allocated to Qatofin.

Un-priced commercial proposals from four EPC bidders were received in December 2003 and technical proposals were received in early 2004. It is expected that the EPC contract will be awarded in the second quarter of 2005.

The FEED contract for the project was awarded to Aker Kvaener in the second quarter of 2003 and was completed in March 2004. Following pre-qualification of potential contractors, the EPC ITB will be issued in the second quarter of 2004.
