QP Operations


Qatar's first well was drilled in Dukhan in 1940.


QP has concluded EPSA and DPSA with the following major international oil and gas companies: ExxonMobil, Anadarko Qatar, Maersk Oil Qatar, Talisman Energy Qatar, Wintershall Consortium, and Marubeni.  

These agreements have enhanced oil and gas reserves through new discoveries and development of existing fields. Some of the fields included in the agreements are Idd Al Shargi Dome (North & South), Al Shaheen F ield,  Al Khaleej Field, Al Rayyan Field, Al Karkara Structure A Field, and El Bunduq.


QP’s refining activities include the processing of crude oil and condensate into domestic and export petroleum products as well as the production and export of GTL, LNG and NGL.

QP Refinery
Qatar Petroleum Refinery started as a small topping plant in 1958, and has grown over the years into a giant refinery organization, successfully making the Qatar self-sufficient and export-oriented in refined oil and petroleum products.

The main activity of the refinery is to process crude oil and condensate into various finished products to meet domestic demand as well as for export. The main finished products are liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), petrochemical naphtha, premium gasoline, super gasoline, jet fuel, diesel and marine fuel oil (MFO).

Gas-to-Liquids (GTL)
The Oryx GTL plant in RLC started production in 2006 with a design capacity of 34,000 barrels per day (b/d) (naphtha, diesel, LPG) with future expansion to reach 100,000 b/d.

Natural Gas Liquids (NGL)
There are four NGL plants in MIC producing propane, butane, and condensate, which are mainly produced for export.

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)
Qatargas is a joint venture originally formed to operate three LNG trains with a design capacity of two million tons per annum each. Today Qatargas is exporting 10 mt/a of LNG from these three trains to customers in Japan and Spain. Currently undergoing a period of rapid expansion, Qatargas is adding four new LNG trains – Qatargas 2, Qatargas 3 and Qatargas 4 – each with a capacity of 7.8 mt/a, raising the total production to 41 mt/a by 2010.

RasGas, a joint venture producing LNG, has a current capacity exceeding 28.5 mt/a. After expansion, total production will exceed 36 mt/a by 2010. RasGas has a 25-year contract to sell 4.8 mt/a to South Korea and another agreement with India to sell 7.5 mt/a for 25 years. Other agreements are signed to provide LNG to several countries, including USA and Italy.


Since July 2007, the Dolphin Gas Project has been producing, processing and supplying substantial quantities of natural gas from offshore Qatar to the United Arab Emirates. Production reached the maximum authorized throughput of two billion cubic feet per day (bcf/d) in February 2008. Other projects are at various stages to supply gas to Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman and Pakistan.


Qatar Fertiliser Company Ltd. (QAFCO)
QAFCO’s total production capacity is 2 mt/a of ammonia and 3 mt/a of urea, making QAFCO the world’s largest single site producer of urea. QAFCO is planning a future expansion (QAFCO-5) which is expected to come on stream in early 2010. When operational, QAFCO-5 will add around 4,400 tons per day (t/d) of ammonia and 3,500 t/d of urea to QAFCO’s production capacity.

Qatar Petrochemical Co. (QAPCO)
QAPCO’s facilities consist of an ethylene plant producing 525,000 tons per annum (t/a), two plants producing 360,000 t/a of low density polyethylene (LDPE) and a sulfur plant producing 70,000 t/a.

The production capacity of ethylene is expected to increase from 525,000 t/a to 720,000 t/a, and total LDPE production capacity will be increased to 650,000 t/a in the 4th quarter of 2009.

Qatar Vinyl Co. (QVC)
The company produces 210,000 t/a of ethylene dichloride, 300,000 t/a of vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) and 360,000 t/a of caustic soda.

Qatar Fuel Additives Co. (QAFAC)
The QAFAC plant produces 903,000 tons of methanol and 672,000 tons of MTBE.

Qatar Chemical Company Ltd. (Q-Chem)
Q-Chem’s world-class petrochemical plant produces 453,000 t/a of high density polyethylene (HDPE) and 47,000 t/a of 1-hexene (alpha olefin) using CPChem’s proprietary technologies.
